Respirer Wine Aerator Review

It appears that we're fast becoming the Internet's premier destination for wine aerator video reviews.

This is the third wine aerator I've reviewed here on the WWP. The first was the Vinturi and the second was the Soirée. The hardest thing about this third product is pronouncing it correctly- the Respirer is pronounced "res-pea-AIR". Have a look at my video review of this fine product:

Part 2: An Interview with Paul Clary of Clary Ranch Wines

Part 2: Vinification

Q: Would you consider yourself more of a grower or a winemaker? Which is harder?

Paul Clary: I'm a winemaker from root to glass. The hardest part about it is staying up for sleepless nights waiting for the frosts. 2008 was an unrelenting spring, as far as frosts go. 25+ frost events, where our previous "worst year" was 5 events. 

Q: Same questions as with grape growing- can you give some specific examples of things you can do (or not do) in the process of making wine that can really make a difference in the quality of the wine produced?

Paul: A routine late-fermentation addition of yeast nutrient can head off sulfide issues... On the "not-to-do" side, I'd say: Resist the temptation to tinker with the wine for off-flavors during barrel aging. The wine is Alive, and usually those off-flavors will resolve by themselves.

Q: Your 2004 Clary Ranch Grower's Reserve Pinot Noir seemed a little "bigger" than the 2006. Do you agree? Don't get me wrong the 2006 was awesome too- in fact it may have been more elegant. But at any rate- if you agree- was that a function of the grape growing season or something you did differently in the winemaking process?

Paul: Yes, the 2004 is a bigger wine, a stand-alone cocktail. The lighter 2006 goes better with a wide variety of foods. 2004's Pinot was made entirely of grapes from Block 4 - the clone is Pommard 4. 2006's Pinot contains mostly clone 4, but also has significant Dijon 113 from blocks 2 & 3, and 667 from block 6. That said, year to year the weather brings what it will, and it is reflected in the resultant wine. 2006 was a lighter year.

Q: I always get "tobacco/cigar box" aromas on your Pinot. Do you get that too? If so, where do you think that's coming from?

Paul: That comes from soaking my old cigars in the wine - just kidding! It's the grape and its environment. Any flavors are coming from the interaction between the grape, the yeast and the barrel. We use 40-50% new french oak, Medium plus toast.

Q: Are you considering making other varietals in the future? Or is Pinot and Syrah your passion?

Paul: For now, I'll stick with Pinot and Syrah, though I'd love to do a Riesling or Gewurz someday.

An Interview with Paul Clary of Clary Ranch Wines: Part 1

Back before I started The Wellesley Wine Press, I mentioned wine stuff occasionally as part of my family blog. One of the lengthier pieces I wrote was on the subject of a wine tasting trip I did out to Sonoma where I first met Paul Clary of Clary Ranch. Here's a picture of me and Paul from that trip back in August of 2007 (Paul is the handsome one on the left):

This past September, I had a chance to go back and visit Clary Ranch in person and get to know Paul and his winery a bit better. Paul was kind enough to do an interview with me that I'll be running as part of a three part series over the next few weeks. I think the answers Paul gave to my questions are *fascinating*. I hope you agree...

Part 1: Viticulture

Q: What did you do for a living before getting into wine, and how did you learn to grow grapes and make wine?

Paul Clary: Before planting the vineyards, I was a carpenter. I grew up helping out at my grandparents' walnut orchard in the foothills of the Sierras. Learned to drive a tractor at age 12. Set fenceposts, trapped gophers, watered seedlings, harvested and processed walnuts. So my agricultural education started from my earliest days. I studied Biological Sciences at UC Davis, getting my Bachelors degree in 1982. In 1998, when I purchased the ranch, I studied viticulture with Richard Thomas at Santa Rosa Junior College. I completed planting 15 acres of Pinot Noir and Syrah in 2000. In 2001, faced with the task of luring buyers for these unproven grapes, I studied winemaking with Ernie Farinias, the cellarmaster at UCD. Later, with the help of fellow UCD Alum, Richard Delmonico, I produced the first wines from Clary Ranch. These wines were used to "demo" the vineyard for grape buyers. I continued to make wine in subsequent years, culminating in the jump to commercial production in 2004.

Q: As we were walking through the vineyard when I visited Clary Ranch, I think I noticed for the first time how much care is put into growing grapes for making wine. But at the same time, in some ways, growing grapes is a very fundamental "farming" operation. Can you give some simple examples of things a grower can do (or not do) that truly makes a difference in the quality of the wine that comes from the grapes?

Paul: Growing grapes is farming. Having a worker make 1 pass through the vineyard costs $X. Whatever he does has to be worth more than $X. Wine grapes have a high enough value, when grown properly, to justify the level of care that you see. Keep in mind that whatever you do, you've got tens of thousands of whatever to do. A simple example of things we do for quality's sake would be pulling the leaves that give morning shade to the grape cluster. We leave the afternoon shade leaves, protecting the clusters from sunburn. The additional morning light results in better color and richer flavors.

Q: How much do you think consumers should pay attention to appellation when making wine selections? I mean, do you think it's smart to pay a premium for Napa Cab over Sonoma? Is locale more important than winemaking -or- is winemaking more important than locale?

Paul: Appellation matters. Farming matters. The right grape, grown properly in the right spot is what matters most.

Q: A lot of wine people will say that the Willamette Valley makes the best Pinot Noir is the US. I think both regions produce excellent Pinot. How do wines made from grapes grown in the Sonoma Coast differ in general from Oregon Pinots?

Paul: I need to drink far more Oregon Pinot to begin to have anything intelligent to contribute on this.

Q: I've heard that the movie "Sideways" has really increased the popularity of Pinot Noir. Did you have your Pinot planted prior to the movie coming out? Either way, is Clary Ranch ideally suited to Pinot and Syrah? Or could it support other varietals?

Paul: Sideways came out several years after we planted. I was certainly glad to see the bump that it gave to the market. While both Pinot Noir and Syrah do very well here, I'd guess that Riesling and Gewurztraminer, among others, would do equally well. Unfortunately, the farming economics of White Wine aren't as advantageous as those of Red Wine.

Why You Should Always Return Corked Wine

In the past couple of months I've opened 3 corked bottles of wine. How do I know they were corked? Great question. Read on...

From some Google searching I found quite a few sites that give some information I believe to be inaccurate (this video is completely off the mark as far as I can tell), but I found the following page to be quite helpful and accurate:

This site describes the smell of a corked wine as follows (and it has nothing to with whether the cork has a good seal or whether the wine has "bled" through the cork as described in that misleading video):

"the aroma of a corked wine as being musty or moldy, like wet newspaper or cardboard, a wet dog or a damp, moldy basement. In other words, it smells like musty mold"

I personally think another comparison worth making is that corked wine smells like the rind of Brie cheese. Wine should *not* smell like this! Wine should smell delcious and fruity- not austere and moldy like a nasty cellar.

I think the reason why we're afraid, as consumers, to return a wine that we suspect is corked is because we're afraid that we're wrong and that we don't know wine. I think this video captures the awkwardness of the situation from the expert's side of the issue:

Nobody wants to be that shmuck of a customer who "poo poos" a wine and returns it demanding another bottle, so we say nothing and drink a wine we don't care for.

Recently, we did our grocery shopping at the Whole Foods Market in nearby Wayland, MA. The Wine Buyer there, Wayne Dills, is a great guy. In the few times I've been there I've seen that he won't let a shopper pass through his wine section without at least saying hello or asking if he can help. We started chatting last time I was in there, and he recommended a couple of inexpensive bottles. I brought them home and immediately opened one of them up. Deanna wasn't impressed- she thought it was "funky". I of course wanted to plow through and enjoy it but after a couple of sips I agreed with her. It just wasnt right. It smelled like moldy cheese. It didn't smell good at all. The next day I brought it back, but I didn't just want a refund- I wanted Wayne to assess the wine and let me know whether he thought it was corked. One whiff and he agree- it was indeed corked.

I found what happened next really interesting. While Wayne was smelling and tasting the wine a woman who was shopping in the area asked if we were doing a wine tasting. Wayne explained that "no, we were just smelling what corked wine smells like- wanna smell it"? She gave it a whiff and said that she smells wine like that all the time and didn't know that's what corked wine smells like. And then another guy came by and was also intrigued. It was really educational- how would we know what corked wine smells like other than an occasion like this?

I explained to Wayne that I'm sometimes bashful about returning wines I suspect are corked because I don't want to be "that guy". He replied that he was *glad* I brought the wine back because retailers can easily exchange corked wines for new bottles from the distributor -and- he'd much rather have me bring back a wine that I suspected of being corked rather than quietly think that his recommendation was a poor one. This is why you should always return corked wine. I'd never thought of it from that angle!

In conclusion, here are some recommendations for dealing with corked wines:
  • Return the bottle as close to full as possible. If you've poured multiple glasses, pour them back into the bottle with a funnel. You don't want to look like you guzzled half the bottle and then want a refund.
  • Buy locally from trusted local wine stores to enable easy returns. Establishing relationships with trusted local wine stores can benefit you on a number of levels.
  • Ask the most knowledgable employee in the store for their opinion of the wine. That way you won't come off looking like a wine snob- you're honestly asking their opinion for your educational purposes.
  • If the store doesn't care to assess whether the wine is corked or not and refuses to give you a refund it is definitely time to look for a new wine store. I've read some estimates that as much as 10% of wines are corked so you can't afford to be losing 10% of your wine spend on bad bottles.

This might be the biggest discount I've heard of from Wine Enthusiast and could be quite a savings if applied to a big ticket item like a EuroCave Wine Cellar. The usual exclusions apply (can't be combined with other offers, can't be used on certain brands, etc).  I don't see EuroCave, Vinturi, or Riedel excluded, so some of the more popular products seem to qualify.

What a Difference a Year Makes

A year ago at the Hingham Wine Merchant's annual holiday show, I wanted to round off a case of wines I was buying so I threw in a couple of bottles of 2004 Artesa Cabernet Sauvignon Napa/Sonoma. I thought the wine was decent, though it's hard to tell at a wine tasting where dozens of wine are sampled. Shortly thereafter, I brought a bottle to a neighborhood holiday party.

The wine was a *stinker* at the party. Not only was it uninspired aromatically, but it had an excessive amount of sediment. Nearly every glass poured from the bottle was cluttered up with significant chunks of debris which made it hard to enjoy the wine at all.

So each time I looked through my wine refrigerator looking to select a bottle for the evening for the past year I'd see the Artesa; and I'd pass. At a retail price in the mid-$20s, it was too expensive to drink on a weeknight, and not nice enough to save for a special occasion. So last week, I decided to crack open the 2nd bottle.

Much to my surprise, the 2nd bottle was *fantastic*. I was stunned! It was quite possibly the most near-perfect wine I've had in months. I gave it 92 points (see my Corkd review here) but I could have easily gone higher. It smelled of deep dark fruit and smoke: Good smoke- like the smell of the Capital Grille on Newbury Street in Boston. It was dense, fruity and savory on the palate. It wasn't too over the top either- it showed some restraint and finesse. It was an amazing California Cabernet.

So I'm left to wonder- what happened here? Was it:

  • A case of bottle variation?

    It's quite possible. Like I said the first bottle threw sediment and the second had none at all. I don't think it's possible for sediment to dissipate over time, so it would seem that the two bottles were quite different.

  • A case of settings my expectations low and being pleasantly surprised?

    That's possible too. I'm frequently disappointed by wines that are overly hyped or expensive- perhaps this is a similar effect in the opposite direction? Perhaps I was so sure this wine would be a stinker that I was amazed that it was even mediocre and consequently was blown away.

  • A case of a wine improving over time and catching it at a better time?

    This is the most interesting possible angle, and one that I hope is the case. I'm skeptical though- could the wine possibly evolve this much in just a year? I dunno. I've heard people in the wine trade say "I tasted this wine last year and I was like 'meh' and this year I'm like 'woah'!"
If I had to guess, I would say it was a combination of bottle variation and catching the wine at just the right time. This experience makes me think that it might be worth trying to wait until California Cabs are 4-5 years old as a rule (rather than the 3 years at which they're typically released). Speaking of which, it's worth mentioning the web site Cellar Tracker which, among other things, is a repository of user-submitted ratings for tons of wines tasted over time to give people a feel for when specific wines are at their prime.

How To: Subscribe to Wine Spectator on the Cheap

With a readership north of 2.6 million, and a (probably debatable) position as the #1 luxury consumer magazine in America, Wine Spectator may be "the" wine magazine to get if you're going to get just one. However, it's not cheap. A quick check for subscriptions at shows that a 1-year subscription will run you $49.95:

"Sure," you say, "all magazines are expensive direct from the publisher. I can get it cheaper online." Not so fast. A check of some sources where I can normally find magazine subscriptions for a *fraction* of the cost from the publisher reveals that Spectator somehow does a very good job of maintaining pricing levels through their distributors: $49.95 $65 $49.95

So, what's the best way to get a subscription to the magazine on the cheap? Frequent flier miles. Using frequently flier miles for subscriptions to magazines that would otherwise be expensive is like killing two birds with one stone because it not only saves you cash, but it also triggers activity on your frequent flier account so that your miles don't expire. For this example, I'll use Delta SkyMiles- here's how you do it:
  1. Log in to
  2. Click on SkyMiles->Use Miles
  3. Select "Redemption Opportunities"
  4. Click "Click here"
  5. Scroll down to see Wine Spectator for 1,000 Delta SkyMiles:

I've done this. It works. The nice thing about this subscription is that it plays nicely with existing subscriptions (ie, if you already have a subscription that's just about to run out, this subscription picks up where the other one left off.)

In my view, a frequently flier mile is worth about 1 cent (and getting worth less each day as airlines diminish the terms associated with their frequent flier programs). Therefore, 1,000 miles is worth about $10 and on Delta (an airline I don't fly regularly) I don't mind spending the miles at all. Compared to $49.95, 1,000 Delta miles is a smokin' deal. Think about it- for the price of one frequently flier ticket (~25,000 miles or around $250 per ticket) you could subscribe to the magazine for the next 25 years! (25 x $49.95 is $1,248.)

Now, for a little extra, you can tack on a subscription to Wine Spectator online which gives you access to all of their historical ratings both on your PC and on your iPhone/iPod touch/BlackBerry. Magazine subscribers get online subscriptions for half off (and you're a subscriber now that you got the magazine for 1,000 Delta SkyMiles, right?) Wine Gift Ideas

It can be difficult buying gifts for someone who knows more about their hobby than you ever will (or will ever care to). You feel as if you can do no right- no matter what you buy will be "wrong" for some reason. Wine in particular is a snobbier than average hobby, full of products and wines that might be desirable for some and out of fashion for others. I share this gift guide in hopes of giving you some ideas of products that at least one wine lover (me) likes:

Less than $10: Screwpull Foil Cutter

Simple and effective- works really well. My sister Kristy bought this for me for Christmas a few years ago and I still use it all the time.

$10: Oxo Waiter's Corkscrew

I love this corkscrew. It's amazing how confusing and ineffective expensive corkscrews can be. Skip all of the fancy winged, electronic, hydraulic nonsense. Get this one and open wine like the pros. Also opens beer bottles and has a foil cutter (though the Screwpull Foil Cutter is much more effective). Also available at Crate & Barrel.

If you don't know much about wine, and you'd like to buy a bottle for some who does I'd recommend three things:
  1. Do a little research. Print out Wine Spectator's list of their Top 100 Wines of 2008 and take it to a nearby wine shop. They'll be happy to help you find a nice bottle from the list, and the person receiving the gift will appreciate that you took a little time to delve into their world to research wine.
  2. Try to pick a bottle that has a special meaning in some way. For example, "Remember that time we went to California? This wine reminded me of that trip." Or, "This bottle is Italian- I thought it would be nice to enjoy together on pizza night." Or, "This bottle is French- If we can't go to Paris this year maybe we can drink this until we think we're there."
  3. Labels matter. Unlike when doing a blind tasting where only the juice matters, when buying a gift the whole package matters. Buy a wine with an attractive label from a good producer. Also, more expensive wines tend to come in heavy bottles, so all else equal go for the heavier bottle.
My pick? "Crack open a bottle of Cakebread"- always appreciated:

If Cakebread isn't available in your area (it's tough to find on the East Coast) Caymus is another nice one. Over the past 10 years, Caymus has been (arguably) the most consistent producer of quality Napa Cab.

I missed the wine tasting but since all red wines are on sale the rest of the month it doesn't feel like much of a loss. It would've been nice if their web site described the details of the Wine Gala with more clarity.

Update (November 17th, 2009): This wine was named Wine Spectator's Wine of The Year, so expect demand to spike on this wine as a result. I haven't seen it available at retailers in some time. It was hard to come by ever since it was rated 95 points and cost only $27. I'd love it if you subscribed to the site via E-mail to hear about great wines like this before they sell out.

As is being discussed in this thread on the Wine Spectator Forums, the 2005 Columbia Crest Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley Reserve received 95 points from Harvey Steiman (who does their Washington, Oregon and Australia ratings). From

"Ripe in flavor, with a vivid array of black currant, blackberry, violet, black tea and black pepper aromas and flavors that zoom through to a long, expressive finish. Shows subtlety in the layers of complex flavor against a refined structure. Tannins are present but nicely contained."

At a release price of $27, and discounts likely available given the production level of 6,000 cases, expect to see this one available at Costco or perhaps Trader Joe's (I swear I've seen it there in the past) for somewhere around $20. 95 points for $20 sets off alarms here at the Wellesley Wine Press, so I'm looking very forward to getting my hands on some of this.

I should mention that one of the wines that made me really start paying attention to Spectator ratings was also from Columbia Crest and also rated by Harvey Steiman: The 2003 Columbia Crest Grand Estates Merlot. It was the first wine I tasted and said "Hey, maybe these guys at Wine Spectator know what they're talking about!" I gave that wine 92 points in my Corkd review and I've got just a couple of bottles left from the case I purchased. I'll be sorry to see the last of that go, but since each point north of 90 is exponentially more difficult to attain, I've got really high hopes for this 2005 Reserve Cab.

Wine Enthusiast Releases Their Top 100 List

Not to be outdone by Wine Spectator Magazine (who released their Top 100 list a few weeks ago), Wine Enthusiast Magazine released their Top 100 list today. Click here to have a look.

I took note of the following wines in Wine Enthusiast's list (along with Wine Spectator and my WWP ratings alongside if possible):

  • 2006 Alma Rosa Chardonnay Santa Barbara County WE 94/$20 (WS 89)

    I picked up a bottle of the 2007 vintage of this same wine at the Hingham Wine Merchant's Holiday Show. I liked it very much at the tasting -and- when I spent some quality time with it the other night. I gave it 90 points in this Corkd review. I'll definitely keep an eye out for more from this producer- especially their Pinot Noir if I see it.

  • 2006 Kendall-Jackson Highland Estates Camelot Highlands Chardonnay Santa Maria Valley WE 94/$25 (WS NR, WWP 92)

    I totally agreed with Wine Enthusiast and Boston wine blogger Ken's Wine Guide on this one. This is a phenomenal Chardonnay- I crowned it my favorite white wine of the summer in my very first blog post here on the Wellesley Wine Press.

  • 2005 Boudreaux Cellars Merlot WE 94/$40 (WS NR, WWP 88)

    I really wanted to love this wine, but I just didn't. That said, it was a good effort and one of the few wines I've tried that I could easily see getting better with age. It was just a little wild at this stage. Boudreaux Cellars was prominently featured in Gary Vaynerchuk's first book: 101 Wines. I'm looking forward to trying their Cab, but I'll let it rest a few years.
It's interesting for me to look through other wine magazines after being such a Wine Spectator "homer". For me, Spectator is the Beckett Baseball Card Monthly/Car Audio Magazine/Martha Stewart Living of the wine world. If you read any one source for too long without looking at other ratings it's easy to begin to think that a certain wine *is* 90 points. Wines aren't ratings- they've each got their own characteristics and we've each got our own preferences. That said, I do have my mind calibrated to Wine Spectator's rating scale. As I've said before: "In Laube We Trust." Even though Spectator, Wine Enthusiast and the Wine Advocate all rate on the same 100-point scale there does seem to be differing levels of discretion from each publication in terms of how scarce a 90 or 95 point rating is. I *think* Spectator is the "stingiest" of the 3, but I don't have data to back that up at this point. It's just a hunch.

At any rate, what I like about Spectator is the clarity they provide into their tasting procedure. From any Wine Spectator Magazine:

"Wines are always tasted blind, in flights organized by varietal, appellation or region. Bottles are bagged and coded. Each tasting begins with a wine previously rated, which is tasted non-blind as a reference point. Other already-rated wines are inserted into the blind tasting to ensure consistency."

From Wine Enthusiast:

"Tastings are conducted individually or in a group setting and performed blind or in accordance with accepted industry practices."

It's this last part that concerns me about Wine Enthusiast. Saying that wines are tasted blind or not technically leaves the door open for 100% of the wines being tasted non-blind! It's like when a store has a sign in the window saying "Up to 60% Off!": Technically there could be *nothing* on sale in the store at all.

Maybe I'm believing in Santa Claus to think that Spectator does all of its tasting blind. If they do taste 100% blind I'm extremely impressed with either Spectator's tasting consistency -or- Caymus (for example) for producing so consistently. Caymus Cab has scored between 91 and 93 every year for the past 10. That's amazing to me.

2006 Villa Pillo Toscana Borgoforte Located!

One of my first posts here on the Wellesley Wine Press featured a 92-point Wine Spectator wine with a release price of just $12: The 2006 Villa Pillo Toscana Borgoforte. 92 points for $12 is a huge Quality-Price-Ratio (QPR) winner; especially for an Italian red.

While visiting some wine shops in the metro Boston area yesterday, I stopped in for a visit to Upper Falls Liquors in Newton. The shop is affiliated with Post Road Liquors in Wayland and Auburndale Wine and Spirits (also in Newton) as I wrote here. Their web site is

Anyway, their special this month and last is "buy 6 mixed bottles from the US or Italy and get 20% off". Those are pretty broad categories, so as I walked around I had a few California wines in mind but nothing I *had* to get. Then I asked the friendly clerk if he had any Villa Pillo (because looking through the bins of Italian wine is a mind-bender for me since the labels all look so similar after a while.) He said "Yeah sure- we have it up front." I was like "Wow!". They had 3 cases of it at a price of $12.99 per bottle. I bought 6 for a per bottle price of $10.39.

For me, it's this kind of value that makes hunting around for specific wines worth it. $10 is a tough, ultra-competitive price point. There is an ocean of bad wine seeking to make its way into our homes- how else to avoid wasting money on mistakes other than relying on professional critics and trusted local wine shops? Not that I always agree with Wine Spectator ratings, but on average I think they're right more than they're wrong.

I haven't cracked open a bottle of this '06 yet, but I did have the '05 and I gave it 85 points. You can read my review here.

Mystery Shopper: Brookline Liquor Mart E-mail Offer

  • Great deals on some great wines
  • Allows you to mix varieties, limited volume required for discount
  • Shop at home, pick-up in store
  • Some ambiguity on the terms of the deal
  • Flaky online reporting of wine availability
I subscribe to a lot of wine shop E-mail lists in the metro Boston area. And why not? If I don't like what they have to say, I just ignore it and move on with my day. The thing I like to hear about most in a wine shop E-mailer is an offer for deep discounts on wine the shop is looking to push out the door for one reason or another. Either they've bought the wine in quantity and they've been able to secure a great price, or they're just looking to liquidate a certain wine for whatever reason.

I've been receiving Brookline Liquor Mart's E-mailer for about a year and for the most part I've not been tempted to bite on their offers. Mostly because the offers were for high quantities of a single wine, or the terms and conditions of procurement were too ambiguous for me to navigate. As a consumer, there is nothing I hate more the ambiguity- clarity is key.

Their latest offer was unique in tone. It responded to customer feedback that aligned with my preferences- that consumers need not buy too much of a single wine to quality for a great deal:

*-I couldn't find a release price for the J Vineyards Pinot. I'd estimate it at $55 given that the 2001 was $50 and the 2006 was $65.

One thing I'm always mildly suspicious of is when a retailers compare their sale price to their own "retail", "list" or "regular" price. This tactic gives them the ability to show a seemingly deep discount by jacking up the every day price. To assess whether each of these were truly good deals, I consulted my Wine Spectator Online subscription and queried what the release price was. Not that the price of wine can't change over time, but I feel the release price is a more valid comparison point than the "regular" price.

I waited a couple of days after I received the mailer to respond. After doing a little research, it seemed that these were genuinely great deals. Not only that, they were appropriately timed to the season (Thanksgiving is just around the corner and Riesling and Pinot Noir are perfect wines for this time of year.) Further, the Brunello included in the offer was a 90 pointer and deeply discounted from release price -and- already aged the 10-years that Brunellos are recommended to be cellared. What a deal!

When I clicked on the link for the Riesling, I got a message saying "Unable to locate this item". Okay, I'm not sure what that means- when I searched for the Riesling by name it didn't turn up. When I clicked on the link in the offer for the Brunello, I got a "SOLD OUT" indication:

I was unsure whether ordering a wine listed as "SOLD OUT" would qualify me for the deal, but I wanted to get the other wines at a good price without ordering too many wines, so I included the Brunello in my order in hopes that it would. The J Pinot and the King Estate Pinot showed as being in stock, so I ordered (2) of the J Pinot, (2) of the King Estate Pfeiffer Pinot, and (2) of the Brunello.

The next day I got a notification back that my order had been filled, and I would be receiving (2) of the J Pinot and (2) of the Brunello. Fine by me, but I thought it was strange that one of the wines listed that was in stock (the King Estate Pinot) was actually unavailable and one of the wines that was listed as Sold Out (the Brunello) was actually in stock. Further, although I selected Store Pick-up (free) for my shipping option:

...when the order was confirmed, it showed as being shipped FedEx Ground at a cost of $26.44:

I called up Eden Stone straight away and she said she'd refund the money for the shipping and I could come pick it up at the store. I haven't seen a credit back on my credit card, but I assume it'll just take a little time.

So today, I drove down to the Brookline Liquor Mart to pick up my 4 bottles. I gave my last name at the counter and while they were poking around trying to find my orded I had a look around the shop. I spotted the J Pinot on the floor for $24.97 (which contradicts the verbage in the offer saying that "these wines are not available in the store".) The reason I was looking for it was that I forgot which wines were shipped and thought that perhaps there might be some remnant bottles on the floor at the same price. I thought to mention this point here in the blog because the J Pinot was one of the best Pinots I have *ever* had at any price. Read my Corkd review here. I gave it 93 points and at $24.97 that makes for an awesome QPR (for a Pinot Noir which is perhaps the highest priced domestic varietal.) I'd highly encourage you to seek this wine out and the pricing at Brookline Liquor Mart surely can't be beat on this item.

In summary, I'd say it was an interesting interaction with Brookline Liquor Mart's Internet Sales/E-mail offer. I'm certainly pleased with the first wine I cracked open and I hope the Brunello is just as good. In the end, it's the enjoyment you get out of the wine in exchanged for your hard earned dollar that determines value. And overall this transaction is looking like a good value.

Long Awaited Blind Tasting: Vinturi vs. Soirée

Some of my first entries on this blog were dedicated to a class of wine gadgets known as aerators. Wine aerators are designed to rapidly "open up" wine and give it more desirable aromatics and smoother flavors. Traditionally, this is achiveved by decanting- a process where you pour the wine into a vessel that exposes as much of the wine's surface area to air as possible in an effort to aerate the wine more rapidly than it otherwise would. Within the last 5 years a class of products have emerged that claim to accelerate the process of decanting such that you decant "on the fly" on an individual serving basis. Two in particular that I focused on were the Vinturi (review, interview) and the Soirée (review, interview).

How We Tasted

In an effort to see which of these devices works better, I set up a blind tasting. For the tasting, myself and two friends tasted the same wine 4 ways:

  • Pop 'n Pour
  • Decanted
  • Soirée
  • Vinturi
In order to emulate both the decanted and pop 'n pour scenarios concurrently, we poured from two bottles. Both bottles were removed from my wine refrigerator (kept at 59F) 2 hours prior to the tasting. One of the bottles was opened and poured into a decanter immediately. My decenter is made by Eisch. I'm not certain of the model since it was a gift, but I have a link to one that looks very similar to it at the end of this review. The other was kept closed and came to room temperature so there would be no temperature variation between the two bottles:

The wine I chose for this tasting was a 2005 Caronne Ste. Gemme. It received 91 points from the Wine Spectator, and was highlighted as one of their "Smart Buys" with a release price of $17.

I chose the wine for this tasting because I felt it would be a good test wine for the aerators and for decanting in general. Red Bordeaux is one of the few varietals widely accepted as being age-worthy, but at the same time those of us who are impatient -or- want to sample young Bordeaux to assess whether we should buy more find reason to crack open a bottle before it's time. A good ballpark in general for cellaring Bordeaux is 10 years. At 3 years old we are drinking this wine very young. According to James Suckling, Spectator's chief Bordeaux taster, this particular wine should be best after 2011; hence the need for decanting or aerating.

My beautiful assistant (not pictured, sorry) randomly determined which wine went with which letter and poured the wines in a separate room, 4 glasses each for the 3 of us:

We then took notes on our preferences and rank ordered the wines 1 through 4 with 1 being our favorite and 4 our least favorite.


Three of us did the tasting. Each of us are enthusiastic about wine, but we have varying degrees of experience with wine. Of the three of us, I would call myself "intermediate"- I am Taster 2. From least experienced to most experienced, here are our results:

  3. Pop 'n Pour
  4. Vinturi
Taster 2:
  1. Soirée
  2. Pop 'n Pour
  3. Vinturi
  4. Decanter
Taster 3:

Overall Results (1 is best, 4 is worst):
  1. Soirée (1.66 Average from scores of 1, 1, 3)
  2. Pop 'n Pour (2 Average from scores of 3, 2, 1)
  3. Decanter (2.66 Average from scores of 2, 4, 2)
  4. Vinturi (3.66 Average from scores of 4, 3, 4)
Possible Conclusions
  • "The Soirée is a Better Product than the Vinturi"

    Averaging the scores certainly does show that the Soirée outperformed the Vinturi, and the Soirée was the favorite wine of 2 our of 3 tasters. I will certainly perform this tasting again with a different wine and different guests.

  • "You Guys Don't Know What You're Doing"

    The fact that Pop 'n Pour on average outperformed the decanter was surprising. Going into the tasting, I was expecting the Decanter to be 1st, Pop 'n Pour to be last and the two instantaneous aerators to be somewhere between. However, the results weren't aligned in this manner. Each of us did indicate noticable differences between the wines being tasted (though the difference wasn't extremely pronounced in my view) so we know that we were at least perceiving differences between the products. Whether we like the results or not- they were the observations made by real people and likely the kind of people you'd have over to your house for wine, so for me these observations are perhaps more meaningful than any expert analysis could be.

  • "Wine Gadgets Don't Work Very Well"

    This could be true. If you want to test whether aerating or decanting is something you find beneficial, try this: Open up a bottle of wine, pour yourself a glass and drink it 3 or 4 hours later. If you can't notice a discernible difference compared to a glass from a freshly opened bottle, decanting/aerating may be a waste of time (and money.)
Closing Thoughts

I'd like to thank my two guests that night for their enthusiastic participation. Having multiple opinions really makes the results more illuminating I think.

    Costco Wine Alert!

    We stopped in at the Costco in Waltham, MA this evening and I'm pleased to report they have a particularly fine selection of wine right now. The selection was so good that as Deanna was leaving the wine area with the kids growing increasingly fussy in the shopping cart I had to call her back because I had too much wine to carry! Here's what I bought:

    2006 La Crema Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 86WS/86 WWP/$22 Release/$16.79 Costco

    I've been quite impressed with this wine in tastings, and it's tough to find a nice Pinot Noir for less then $20. Finding even a "good" bottle for $16.79 was reason enough for me to pick up a couple of these for the holidays. Aunt Sarah loves Pinot, and I do too- especially this time of year. Something about the varietal says "harvest" to me.

    2007 Seghesio Zinfandel Sonoma County 93WS/90WWP/$24 Release/$16.79 Costco

    I've previously mentioned this one on a number of occasions. First, in general praise of the wine and second to acknowledge its making the Top 10 of Wine Spectator's Top 100 list for 2008. I don't know what's more amazing: A delicious 93-point California red wine for a release price of $24, Costco having it for $16.79, or the fact that they still have some remaining. At this price, you must buy this wine!

    2005 Hewitt Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford 94WS/$85 Release/$64.99 Costco

    I was really impressed with this wine at The Hingham Wine Merchant's Holiday Wine Show, but I was already planning on buying a bottle of Honig Bartolucci Cab so I held off. When I saw it at Costco at this favorable price, I had to buy a bottle. This *is* premium Napa Cab. It definitely impressed in the tasting, and at this price point I look at the whole package. The freakin' bottle is like 4 pounds and has a punt you could hide a golf ball in. Big time stuff- I'll be saving this one for a special occasion for sure.

    By the way, there's an ongoing thread in the Forums with the same title as this blog entry where people across the country post wine deals they see at Costco.

    I noticed a couple of other non-wine items I thought to mention. An 8GB iPod Touch for $219 (review, retail is $229) and a Flip Mino pocket Camcorder for $144. Good prices on these great products.

    An Interview with Andrew Lazorchak from Soirée

    As I mentioned in my prior video review, the good folks who make the Soirée Wine Aerator were very accommodating of my requests. Andrew Lazorchak is a really great guy and he was nice enough to spend some time talking on the phone with me about the Soirée. Here is an interview I did with Andrew.

    First off, thanks so much for the samples and thanks for taking the time to discuss the Soirée with us consumers. I really appreciate it.

    Q: What is your role at Soirée?

    Andrew Lazorchak: Bob, it is really our pleasure. As you would imagine we are happy to have your review of the product, and we are excited to see how the head-to-head with Vinturi goes. Your examination is thorough and we are glad to take this opportunity to delve into the product.

    I am the Managing Director at Soirée. However, I am one of three partners who all helped craft the Soirée. My partners are Patrick & Coleen Costin. We are long time family friends who were brought together by our passion for good times and wine. As a team, we have constructed every piece of the brand and the product.

    My role is a little bit of everything. From design, graphics, marketing, order placement, fulfillment, website design, team development….you name it – I am involved and I love it.

    Q: Who invented the Soirée?

    Andrew: My partners and myself all lent a hand in the generation of Soirée. As mentioned above, we spent many hours around the cellar bar or the kitchen table, and then one day we found ourselves designing a product, a brand, and an element that would all bring us closer to the world of wine. The Soirée was developed for 1.5 years, where we celebrated late nights of vino (Aka “product testing”) and development. And eventually, after many shapes and sizes, we arrived upon the Soirée. Honestly, we had so much more built into it as a concept. But we learned quickly that there is only so much you can do with glass, and more importantly, that wine only needs so much massaging to wake up.

    Q: As I showed in the review, one of my samples broke because the green neck that holds the Soirée when not in use came loose from the base. If that same thing happened to someone who bought a Soirée, how would you handle a warranty replacement? How would you recommend customers contact Soirée for something like this?

    Andrew: Great question. We always support our retailers, their customers, and our direct sale customers. Anyone that contacts Soirée with a quality issue, we look to take care of them straight away. Soirée will gladly send a replacement product assuming the claim is fair, after all they are glass and you do use them while drinking. But we do pride ourselves on our customer service and help out our customers and supporters whenever possible. The best way to contact us is by emailing us or using our contact form on the webpage. The main mailbox is and our phone is 1-888-5-Soiree. We welcome people to call us but that number is primarily set-up for our vendors to place orders.

    And in response to the loose green neck you experienced; the way the base is assembled you can unscrew the green neck from the plastic base. It does have a tiny bit of glue to keep it in place. But on a rare occasion, the neck will become loose during shipping. It simply twists back in like a light bulb and should stay securely in place.

    Q: In my video review, you can see I had some trouble understanding how to use the additional gasket with a screwcap bottle with a larger than standard enclosure. I think I figured it out since however- I'm supposed to attach the additional gasket to the Soir
    ée and *then* stick it in the bottle, right?

    Andrew: Bob, I did see you have trouble with the extra gasket, you are not alone. And this does raise a great question. The extra gasket.....

    Well first, I will note that every Soirée is packaged with an insert card with basic use and care instructions. We do review the gaskets in our instructions, but we know that the extra piece can be mis-leading. We’d like our customers to know that we have received phone calls where we help explain the product and how it works with people, and that is great by us. We enjoy hearing people's experiences with their Soirée, we learn a lot from those interactions. You know, it is really awesome when someone calls you and just raves about your product. Not that it happens all the time, but recently it did. I got to talk with a wine enthusiast for an hour about their experience with Soirée, and my thoughts and their thoughts and on and on.... Point here is, don’t be afraid to contact us with questions, we look forward to speaking with you.

    But to clarify the question about the gaskets. The gasket with 2 flanges is used with standard cork-top bottles. This Soirée comes in the package with the 2-flange gasket on it. The 2-flange gasket must be removed before the 3 flange gasket is applied. Now candidly, the 3 flanged gasket works with most screw cap bottles, however there are a select few that are even wider than we had seen in our studies. If it does not fit 100% comfortable we recommend you do not try to use the Soirée with that bottle. (but if you are daring you can always hold the Soirée in place while pouring and it should not leak and still work well.)

    And one side note when interchanging the gaskets the gaskets can sometimes be hard to remove. If the gasket you have on the Soirée is really tight, just get it wet. Once water gets between the glass and rubber, the friction seal goes away and the rubber gasket will slide right off.

    Q: What kind of wineries have been particularly receptive to the Soirée? Any region or varietal where the Soiree is particularly well suited?

    Andrew: Well that is a good question, as I never thought of it in that way. I'd say that the wineries and vineyards that carry the Soirée and feature it in their tasting rooms, have one common thread they are "Good People". Seriously. The people who have tried the Soirée are typically more open-minded and willing to drop their preconception of how wine should be served or if it can be enhanced by “gadgets”. And I'd say that 80% or more of the people that try Soirée love it and become quick fans of the product. Yet of course, there are a few "Doubting Thomas' " and "know-it-all wine lovers" out there, and we appreciate them for that, as it keeps us on our toes.

    But does Soirée thrive per grape varietal or region? I do not think so. We see sales from Upstate New York to Georgia to California , and many places in between. And we are international, with distribution in Australia , and the EU this November. So the Soirée works with a lot of the different varietals, and with wines from most regions.

    But for the sake of generalizing, Soirée is great for mellowing out wines that are tightly crafted, have lots of structure, or just need a little help "stretching out". Further, Soirée is good for dispersing the "hot" alcohol burn that can come with wines from hotter climates. Reds are great with Soirée. Reds just have more to them and need more help opening up.

    And for the record, the Soirée is not about a single variety or region. The best bet is to just try the Soirée. Try it on a Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Rose, and of course all the reds. You will see bouquet enhancement on whites, depth added to young wines, and your big boy reds; they will be "unleashed" with their flavors, nuances, and aromatics enhanced in a gentile and surprising manor. I always encourage people to do a taste test with every bottle. Simply pour some wine straight from the bottle into a glass, then pour a second glass through the Soirée. Then taste, see what you notice...that is the fun of explore what is has to offer...or the story it will tell.

    There are so many aspects of Soirée that have been a blessing and treasure. What grabs me most is the ability to interact with the wine trade and people who enjoy wine. To get to know the trade is to hang-out with a lot of kind people who celebrate their passion for art in the form of winemaking. Truly, the wine makers, vineyard owners, and wine reps all share a unique bond and camaraderie in their labor, it is usually a welcoming scene and good-natured people.

    At the same rate, it is priceless to be able to talk directly to the fellow wine appreciator. Most wine drinkers enjoy learning more about wine, and to discuss view points and opinions. I really like the opportunity to share the Soirée and illuminate the common oversight of the average wine drinker. Most wine drinkers admit they do not decant their wine or reserve decanting for fancy bottles. This commonality makes it a great opportunity to demonstrate Soirée and receive the "Wows" when people see how easy and affective aeration is for wine. It's a great job!     The Wine House's 1st Anniversary Tasting: A Success

    "Don't Open a Shop Unless You Like To Smile"

    Rochelle and Scott Wagner celebrated the 1st Anniversary of The Wine House with an awesome tasting at The Holliston Historical Barn last night. I had a chance to drop in and it was evident in the time I was there that they both understand the meaning behind the Chinese Proverb cited above. They were all smiles while referring to their customers by name, making sure everything ran smoothly, and having a good time alongside those who have made their first year in business a success.

    Judging from the wines available for sample, it would appear that The Wine House focuses on expanding the palates of their customers by exposing them primarily to reasonably priced wines ($8-$30) from top regions in the United States and around the world. A good recipe for success if you ask me.

    Maybe it was because I read Wine Spectator's issue on "Great Reds from Spain and Portugal" before leaving for the show, but I thought those areas were particularly well represented and I ordered a few of bottles from those regions. I also enjoyed trying some new things- a white Bordeaux, some Australian Port, and white blends from around the world. Oh- and I especially appreciated Scott mentioning to me that Ruby (one of the distributors at the show) was pouring some Altamura Sangiovese that wasn't on the list of wines for tasting (a secret extra wine!) Scott noticed (and remembered) my mention of the Altamura as one of my favorites from a tasting I went to last week- now that's personalized service!

    Random Observations:
    • I'll always associate Hollison, MA with being the home of John Cooley of ESNUG fame. A rare crossover between this wine blog and my full-time job.
    • The venue was really cool. Rustic but comfortable. Festively attended but not annoyingly crowded.
    • The people who attended the event were polite and friendly. I've run into some rather rude types at wine tastings in the past so it's nice to see that nice people shop at The Wine House.
    • It's not a bad drive from Wellesley to Holliston, MA. An easy shot (about 20/25 minutes) out Route 16 through some nice towns.
    I'll follow-up with a store profile of The Wine House after I get a chance to visit it to pick up the wines I ordered. I have a feeling I'm going to like it...
